Border Livestock Exchange to week ending Friday 6th June sold 186 Prime Cattle including 28 Cows, 1,639 Prime Lambs, 215 Cast Ewes, 82 Store Cattle and 26 Cows with calves at foot.

Prime Cattle were again steady with good demand for in spec Steers and Heifers. Over 16 month Young Bulls were slower to sell. Aberdeen Angus Cross Steers from South Farm, Newcastle on Tyne sold to 365p per kg to Well Hung and Tender , Berwick upon Tweed. Cast Cows were short of demand selling to 270p per kg and £1,329 per head for a Charolais Crosses also from South Farm.

Prime Lambs continue to sell very well with top prices going to Yetholm farms of Primside, Lochside and Cherrytrees. Texel Cross to 535p per kg and £112.35 per head. Charollais Crosses from Cornhill on Tweed to 520p per kg and £109.20.

Old Season Lambs sold to 460p per kg and £101.20 Hill Top East, Darlington.

Breeding and Store cattle were short of requirements with a firm demand for all types.



John Swan Ltd sold 78 clean cattle, 29 OTM cattle, 1009 new season lambs 298 old season hoggs and 203 ewes

Bullocks (25) averaged 199p per kg and sold to 221p (-2.5p on week)

Heifers (49) averaged 207p per kg and sold to 235p (-2.3p on week)

Young Bulls (4) averaged 169.2p per kg and sold to 190p (n/c on the week)

29 beef type OTM cattle averaged 128.4p per kg and sold to 159p (-0.4p on the week)

5 Dairy type OTM cattle averaged 103.4p per kg and sold to 117p

New season lambs averaged 248.6p per kg (-12.5p on the week) and sold to £126

Old season hoggs averaged 167.4p per kg and sold to £101

Ewes averaged £75.42, and sold to £116

Heavy ewes £89.47, light ewes £64.29




At Borderway Mart Carlisle, on Monday 9, June Harrison & Hetherington held their weekly sale of Primestock with a total of 369 cast cows, stock bulls, prime cattle and beef bulls forward with a good ring of buyers ensuring all classes sold well.

Cast Cows & OTM Cattle – In the cast cow section M/s Suddes & Sons, South Farm, Durham sold 4 pure Limousin cows which topped at 788 kg, 166.5ppk totalling £1312 to Charles Kirkpatrick. Messrs Thompson, Townfoot Limousin cows topped at 164.5ppk again purchased by Charles Kirkpatrick. Mr Walker, Beech Croft, Cockermouth sold the top priced British Blue cross cow selling for 768kg, 164.5ppk £1263 bought by Charles Kirkpatrick. Manor Farms run of cows topped at 918kg, 138.5ppk £1271 for a Saler once again bought be Charles Kirkpatrick. Mr Peter Vasey, Holme House, sold the top priced Charolais cow weighing 837kg at 148.5ppk, £1242. Messrs Bowker & Sons, Rigghead sold the top priced Holstein cross cow selling for 140.5ppk to Les Fell. Messrs Telfer & Son, Mainsbank Farm, sold the top priced Holstein cross cow selling for 887kg, 124.5ppk £1104 to Shaun McGimpsey.

Prime Cattle – Yet another large show of 76 prime cattle were forward, whereby all classes sold slightly less on the week. Top overall prime animal was a British Blue bullock from Messrs Anderson of Crosby House Farm, Maryport achieving £1563.64 and top priced heifer was a Limousin cross from Messrs McClellan of Stainburn, Workington achieving £1355.86 both of the above were purchased by weekly buyers Pioneer Foods, Carlisle. Top price per kilo was attained by Messrs Dodd of West View, Penrith with their Limousin cross steer selling to 218.5ppk and was purchased by Mr Les Fell and finally heifers peaked at 211.5ppk for a British Blue from Messrs Bell of Woodhall, Newcastle and was purchased by Mr John Little.

Prime Bulls – A big turnout of 86 prime bulls were forward, with all classes selling to a similar rate to last week. Top bull was a Limousin from Messrs Nixon of Stotsfold Farm, Hexham selling to £1554.95 whilst top pence per kilo of 209.5ppk was attained by Messrs Story of Jackson Rigg, Longtown for their British Blue cross. Finally black and whites ended up with a day’s top of £1069.38 for a British Friesian from Messrs Bland of The Flatt, Carlisle and top pence per kilo came from Messrs Hogg of Whitehead Hill, Cumwhitton achieving 148.5ppk for their great run of British Friesian bulls.

Prime Lambs – Prime lambs met a great enquiry throughout the sale with an overall average of 250.98ppk which was a rise of 17ppk on the year. Topping the sale at £140.80 was Messrs Hewson of Scales Hall, Calthwaite with a pair of Texel cross lambs which sold to Bowood Yorkshire Ltd. Messrs Hewson’s lambs averages £129.93. Top rpice per kilo was 290.2ppk which was paid for a single Texel cross lamb shown by Messrs JJ & CE Palmer of Greensyke, Lamplugh, weighing 43kg it sold to £124.80 and purchased by Bowood Yorkshire Lamb Ltd.

Prime Lambs: The Opening sale of prime lambs met a fast trade with a number of new buyers around the ring. Topping the sale at £115 was a pen of Beltex lambs from Messrs Cameron of Woodburn House, Ecclefechan. More lambs could have been sold to vendors advantage.

Hope’s Auction Co. Ltd., Wigton held their Fortnightly sale of Store Cattle with a catalogued entry of 220 store cattle. Also forward this day was 52 breeding sheep and 72 OTM Cattle.

A strong trade for all classes with forward stores topping at £1305 for an 18 month old Charolais Steer from Messrs Carter, High Holmes, Hexham. Forward Heifers topped at £1130 for a Limousin from Messrs Lister, Foxhouses, Maryport. Younger cattle peaked at £1090 for a 12 month old Limousin Steer from I & CL Richardson, Greenlands, Cockermouth and summering Heifers also reaching £1090 for a 12 month old Limousin from Messrs J Harrington, Riggwood, Cockermouth. Bulls sold to £1075 for a Limousin from Messrs Norman, High House, Kirkbride.
