Harrison & Hetherington held their weekly sale of primestock. Cast Cows & OTM Cattle – A smaller show of 219 cast cows were forward with the usual ring side of buyers from all parts of the country to ensure that all classes being a good 10p up on the week.

Messrs Sowerby & Sons, Sycamore Rise run of cows topped at 172.5p for a Limousin cross purchased by Mr John Robertson. Messrs Greenbank, The Faulds sold a Blonde cow for 169.5p also bought by Mr John Robertson. Mr David Holmes, Nutholm Farm sold a Limousin cross for 168.5p again purchased by Mr John Robertson. Vevers Ltd, High Plains sold the top priced Holstein x heifer selling for 166.5p, weighing 689kg £1147 bought by Les Fell. Mr Mark, Sunny Gill Farm sold the top overall priced Limousin cross cow selling for 165.5p at 783kg totalling £1295 to Mr Shaun McGimpsey. Messrs Marrs & Son, Broomhills black and white cows topped at 124.5p at 883kg totalling £1099 to Les Fell.

A run of outstanding black and white cows from Messrs Fisher, Smalmstown Farm topped at 879 kg at 124.5p £1094 purchased by Mr Les Fell. Messrs Ward, Whitestonehill sold the top priced Charolais stock bull weighing 1309 kg at 127.5p making £1668 bought by Charles Kirkpatrick.

Prime Cattle – Yet another good show of 52 prime cattle was forward, in the ever increasing Primestock ring, whereby all classes sold extremely well. Top overall price per head went to a British Blue steer from the weekly supporters Messrs Musgrave of Cardew Hall, Dalston, selling to £1892.41 and was purchased by Pioneer Foods. Also achieving the same figure was Messrs Bowe of Bothel, Wigton selling his marvellous Limousin cross steer.

In the heifer section top overall was an outstanding Charolais cross from Messrs Dixon of Low Whinnow, Wigton selling to £1535.36 of 229.5ppk purchased by Messrs Mulholland, Butchers Shop, Great Orton.

Finally top price per kilo was a very flashy and smart Limousin cross heifer from Messrs Dodd of West View, Temple Sowerby, selling to 239.5ppk and was purchased by Wights of Boston. Prime Bulls – A smaller entry of 47 prime bulls were forward, however they sold to a better trade on the week. Top overall bull was a Limousin from Messrs Edgar of Fellside, Penrith selling to £1604.38.

Top price per kilo was a Limousin consigned by Messrs Norman of Little Orton Farm, Carluke peaking at 216.5ppk.

A better show of Black and Whites were forward with all classes dearer on the week, selling to a top of £1165.92 for a Friesian from Messrs Graves of Old Town Farm, High Hesket, and top price per kilo went to Messrs Dickinson of High House, Hesket New Market selling to 179.5ppk again with a tremendous Friesian. More of all classes are required to fulfil the ever growing demand.

Prime Hoggs –Trade for prime hoggs took a rise of 6ppk to level at 195.49p with an SQQ of 202.70ppk. All classes sold exceptionally well, with heavy hoggs noticeably dearer on the week. Topping the sale at £112.80 was a pen of 41.5kg Dutch Texel cross hoggs from Messrs Harrison of Grange Hall, Gt Asby who had a fantastic run of sheep forward. Messrs Harrison also topped per kilo at 272ppk again for Dutch Texels which weighed 40kg and sold at £108.80 both lots sold to Mr Robert Skelton. Mule hoggs sold to a top of £93.80 for a pen consigned by Messrs P Walker of Beech Croft, Mockerkin.

Harrison & Hetherington held their weekly sale of store and breeding sheep with a good entry forward. Top price of the day was £76 for a pen of Texel lambs from G & HJ Bell, Mosshill, Hallbankgate.

Today also saw the first sale of ewes and lambs with a good ring side of buyers forward selling to a top of £73 for Texel 2 Shear ewes with pairs from Messrs Ramsey, Dockray Hall, Wigton.

Mini heston bales of wheat sold to £84 per tonne. Mini heston bales of haylage sold at £60 per tonne and round bales sold at £26 per bale.

The Cumberland & Dumfriesshire Farmers Mart P.L.C. had forward 1,367 store hoggs and feeding sheep. Another grand show sold at recent high rates to a busy ring of buyers, both local and distant. Many more hoggs could be sold to advantage. Breeding sheep sale will be next week.
