HEXHAM

March 14

Hexham & Northern Marts had forward an entry of 622 store cattle and suckled calves for their weekly catalogued sale. With 75 consignors presenting cattle for sale a more mixed show of beast were offered when compared against the quality seen throughout the special sale the previous week.

That said, as always a considerable number of older, forward stores were sold at the start of the day and these continued to sell in the same strong vein of trade seen previously.

Leading the charge on the day were two great Charolais cross bullocks from distant and regular consignor; Ian Thornton, Hay-a Park, Knaresborough, North Yorks which at 24 months were sold singly to realise £1550 and £1540. These were followed by two more Charolais cross steers and a Limousin cross from another regular face in the ring at Hexham and producer of top quality store bullocks; Joe Vickers, Rennington South, Alnwick.

These three at 20 months sold for £1490 and £1470 respectively while The Walker Bros. Satley Farm again favoured the store ring and sold eight big Charolais cross steers to a top of £1455 twice and an average of £1390. It was a double triumph from the North Nothumberland village of Rennington for as well as Joe Vickers’ strong trade, Michael Tulip of North Rennington came back to the Hexham ring for the second time in as many weeks after a nne-year absence to take advantage of the good rates at this centre with some powerful Charolais bred steers that peaked at £1425 and averaged £1347 at 20 months.

With a sharper trade evident for the majority of the forward stores a more mixed show of yearling and younger cattle resulted in a more hesitant demand from the crowd of buyers at the ringside. Despite this the best end of younger types continued to sell well and peaked at an astounding £1420 for a well bred and shapely Black Limmy cross bullock consigned from altitude by Messrs Graham, West Foreshield, Alston. An undoubted highlight of the cattle under twelve months were the great run of Charolais cross steers and heifers at 10-11 months from Crowhall Farms. These over wintered calves came forward in great fettle with frame, shape and bags of potential to peak at £1160 for steers and £1000 for heifers and average £1020 (9) and £941 (8) respectively. With the special monthly sale for native breed cattle next week producers are urged to contact our auctioneers for best advice on how and when to market their cattle.
