Championing the North East to the rest of the world on social media has won a nomination in the Journal’s search for the North East’s Most Influential on social media for NewcastleGateshead Initiative’s (NGI) Sharon McKee.
The interim head of communications at NGI has been named as a contender for her insightful tweets on events happening around Newcastle and Gateshead.
Sharon, who tweets as @SEMComms , has more than 1,400 followers who she regales with updates about her family life, her Great North Run training and insights into the goings on of the region.
With over 20 years’ experience working as a communications professional she said she knows how important it is to use social media to tell people how great the North East is.
She said: “Twitter is really important as it allows you to have conversations with people you would not usually be able to reach in other ways. It is good for making connections. I have ended up meeting people in real life who I am not sure I would have met any other way.”
Her top five recommendations of people to follow online includes NGI’s corporate twitter account @altweet_pet which she says is the best for providing information on what’s going on in the area.
She also highlights Maximo Park’s front man Paul Smith ( @paulsmithmusic ) as interesting to follow for recommendations on music and books. Another Paul Smith ( @paul_a_smith ), the Gateshead-based author of Twitchiker comes at top of her list for travel related information.
