Construction technology businessman Rob Charlton has an open approach to using social media which has garnered him a nomination in The Journal’s search for the North East’s Most Influential People in Social Media.

The chief executive of SpaceGroup, based in Newcastle, uses Twitter as a business networking tool but isn’t afraid to admit that his guilty secret is following tweets from the cast of Geordie Shore.

Rob, who has worked at Space Group for more than 11 years and was previously an architect with Sunderland City Council, said social networking was an important way to do business.

He said many organisations involved in the construction technology industry use social media to communicate making it a must-use tool for his business.

He said: “Social media is good for doing business. It is also good to communicate what you are doing as a business. For me it is a communication tool. I think it is best when it comes from yourself and you are true to your personality.”

A look at his Twitter profile, which has just short of 900 followers shows his interest in retweeting industry specific updates including opportunities for graduates, training and business leads.

While he adds his own personality by giving his followers updates on his work night out and family holiday.

His love of Geordie Shore reflects his approach to social media where he likes to follow a mix of industry figureheads as well as light entertainment.

Among his top five recommendations of who to follow in social media is the hashtag #UKBimCrew, where a group of Building Information Modeling experts meet to discuss the industry.

He also follows the popular hashtag #NorthEastHour and explained that he follows Darlington businessman Duncan Bannatyne, ( @duncanbannatyne ) for light relief.
