WIGTON: January 14

Hopes Auction Co held their weekly sale of Primestock when there was an entry of 112 Cattle, 34 Bulls and 842 Prime Sheep including Ewes. The top price of 258.5p per kg was paid for a British Blue Heifer from L Skelton & Son, Low House Farm, Dearham. The top price per head for heifers was £1465.91 for a Limousin shown by Messrs Lee, Langrigg House and was purchased by RJ Harrison, Butcher, King St, Wigton.

Steers sold to a top price of 230.5p three times, firstly for a Limousin and twice for British Blues all shown by D Anderson, Crosby House Farm, Crosby, Maryport. Top price of £1596.45 was paid for a Limousin Steer shown by Messrs Bowe, Bothel Parks, Bothel.

Hoggs - A smaller show and although the SQQ still over 205p per kg, interest in hoggs just a bit harder to muster. That said, plenty of hoggs 220p per kg plus for handy types. The bigger hoggs taking a hit as imports compete for the cutting jobs. Please don’t invest in making sheep heavy and/or too thick, sometimes less is more!
