The Cumberland & Dumfriesshire Farmers’ Mart had forward 2,594 store hoggs, 347 commercial breeding sheep and 28 pedigree in-lamb females

Today the firm also held its inaugural sale of pedigree in-lamb females alongside the sale of commercial in-lamb sheep.

The 28 pedigree females forward for our first sale averaged a very pleasing £416 per head. We hope to make this fixture bigger and better each year now that our first try has been a success.

Topping today’s sale was the Bluefaced Leicester section where the first gimmer from Messrs J. Wight & Sons, Midlock sold for £1,700. This gimmer was by 3320/B4 Tanhouse and sold in lamb carrying triplets to 1538/W25 Midlock Controversy. The final bid on this sheep was made by Mr McQuiston, Barnshangan. Two other Midlock gimmers sold at £500 and £400 both to Mr McKie, Finniness.

In the Texel gimmer department trade was buoyant from the off with a full ring of buyers ensuring the first time sale went off with a bang. The Texel section was topped at £550 for a gimmer from S. Renwick, Craig Douglas, his number 2 gimmer by Livery Predator sold carrying twins to homebred ram, Craig Douglas Uther and was purchased by Charollais breeder J. Wales, Thackwood. Mr Renwick sold another two gimmers at £520 firstly to Thackwood then to Messrs Graham, Upper Mains, both again in lamb to Uther.

Mr Warnock, Sandilands realised £450 for his fourth gimmer by Watchknowe President and sold in lamb carrying twins to Castleknowe Uncle, purchased by Messrs Lewis, Wales.

Another fine show of store hoggs was forward to the usual ring of seasonal buyers. The store hoggs were maybe not the strength of previous weeks but sold at recent high rates.

Also forward were 347 commercial breeding sheep, where all classes sold at decent rates to a full ring of buyers. Younger sheep keenly sought after.

The sale was topped at £160 for a pen of 10 Texel two crop ewes in lamb to Beltex from W. Gribbon & Co., Waterside, selling to Messrs Ireland.

The Cumberland & Dumfriesshire Farmers Mart PLC held their special January sale of store cattle, suckler calves and breeding cattle.

An increased number of store cattle sold saw the averages a shade up on the year with a full ring of buyers ensuring vendors were happy with returns. Top price to £1,270 for a Limousin bullock shown by J.A. & D. Forster, Gillalees, with British Blue bullocks selling to £1,250 (x5) from A. & J.N. Story, Newbiggin. Limousin heifers sold to £1,180 also from Messrs Story, Newbiggin.

Breeding cattle met a flying trade with the highlight of the sale the part dispersal from G. McGimpsey & Co., D’Mainholm, whose run of British Blue & Limousin cows and heifers with Limousin calves at foot averaged £1,822.86 and topped at £2,200 for a Limousin heifer with Limousin bull calf.

John Swan Ltd sold 104 clean cattle, 70 OTM cattle, 2070 old season lambs and 606 ewes.

Bullocks (40) averaged 217.9p per kg and sold to 248p (-2.4p on week). Heifers (62) averaged 219.4p per kg and sold to 258p (-1.1p on week). 2 young bulls averaged 161.2p per kg and sold to 164p (n/c on week). 70 beef type OTM cattle averaged 117.9p per kg and sold to 187p (n/c on the week). Old season SQQ lambs averaged 194.4p(38-42kg) per kg (+13.2p on week) and sold to £92.

Ewes averaged £47.42, and sold to £97, £81 for tups. Heavy ewes £63.75, light ewes £43.94.

WIGTON

Hope’s Auction Co. Ltd held their January show and sale of store cattle with a catalogued entry of 588, a superb show for the Agri-Lloyd-sponsored event. Both quality and strength throughout the sale met a strong trade for all classes producing a wonderful sale average of £1026.90.

Topping the sale was a classy 9 month old Charolais Heifer from Messrs Trafford, Peterhouse Farm, Bassenthwaite realising £1700. The show was ably judged by Mr B. Smith, Leamington Spa, who after some deliberation awarded the Championship to Thomas & Richard Greenbank, The Faulds, Caldbeck who presented a tremendous 12 mth old British Blue Bullock which later sold for £1300 to the judge. Bulls remain good to sell achieving a top of £1290 for the Reserve Champion, a pure Limousin from RE & KM Jackson, Lane End, Blencogo. 29 Bullocks sold over £1300 to a top of £1450 for GB Wright & Son, Tarnrigg Moor, Oulton; 26 Heifers sold over £1200 to a top of £1700 for Messrs Trafford, Peterhouse Farm, Bassenthwaite. A staggering 312 cattle made over £1,000.
