An award-winning Northumberland company that makes 100% natural cleaning products has attracted a £30,000 equity investment to help it expand further.

The Hexham-based Home Scents is being assisted for the second time by venture capital management firm Rivers Capital Partners, who provided help last year in getting ambitious growth plans off the ground.

The latest round of funding has meant Home Scents could bring in a consultant to help the firm deal with larger companies.

It has also enabled the recruitment of an additional part-time workshop employee, allowing founder Judith Mathias more time for other business activities.

“This support is really useful to us,” Mathias said.

“Whilst we had all the ambitions and ideas to take Home Scents to another level, it was only with Rivers Capital’s help that we could really step up production and develop our range.

“It is the second investment we have had from them and they can see that we are moving forward.

“The way the Violet laundry wash has taken off has been amazing.”

Set up just over five years ago by Judith and her husband John, Home Scents now has an office and workshop in Hexham, employing five people. It manufactures around 70 products, from their bestselling Violet’s Magic Laundry range to bath and body products – all environmentally-friendly, handmade and free from synthetic chemicals.

Recently, the company, named Best Creative Business at the latest North East Women Entrepreneur of the Year Awards, has been working on developing its export market and has rebranded its baby range.

“Our products are excellent, they’re all-natural and they’re kind to children,” Mathias said. “There’s been a big increase in childhood eczema and with our products you don’t get those kinds of problems.”

Michael Dickens of Rivers Capital Partners, who led the recent investment, said: “We focus on the entrepreneurs themselves just as much as their products.

“Judith and John have an incredible passion to provide an honest, environmental product that doesn’t sacrifice on quality – a passion that commercial brands just cannot match.”
