Hexham & Northern Marts held the first of their Special May sales of Store Cattle & Suckled calves and kicked the month off with a great entry of 1454 head for the Prize show & sale kindly sponsored by The National Beef Association, Hodgson Toyota (Newcastle), Andrew Frost Farm Services (Wooler), Lawlers Animal By Product Recycling and Northumberland County Show.

Prior to the sale the show was expertly judged by Mr David Wilson, Harome, York and from a small but select entry he awarded the Overall Championship to a smart and shapely British Blue Cross Steer exhibited by Charles Nixon, Longlea, Wark. Winning his first ever Overall Championship at this centre with the entirely white ten month old bullock Charles had previously been awarded the British Blue cross championship and the first prize rosette in the preliminary class. The auctioneers heartily congratulate Charles and The Nixon Family for their success and hope this triumph will spur them on to compete in the show ring in the future.

Taking home the Reserve Overall Championship award, The Limousin Championship, First prize Limmy steer and the Northumberland County Show award for the best presented calf were regular competitors, father & son show team Nicky & Ian Robinson, Boghall, Capheaton. The halter led jet black bullock at 13 months was very well turned out to a high standard which has now become the norm from these producers ensuring plentiful buyer interest at the ringside.

These two cattle were presented for sale with the champion selling for £1120 to the judge and the reserve for £1210 to Messrs Connor, Cowlam, Driffield. Following this the company made a presentation to Mr Roy Coe, mart foreman of over 20 years, on the occasion of a landmark birthday.

Mr Coe was presented with a Border Fine Art of his favoured breed, a British Blue cow and calf and a replica shirt of his beloved Sunderland AFC displaying his name and ‘squad number’. His wife Anne was presented with a bouquet of flowers in recognition of her work behind the scenes and in supporting her husband in what can often be a difficult and demanding role.

With over 300 older cattle offered following the prompt 9am start time these sorts were slightly dearer on the week for a marginally better show of quality. The day belonged however to the younger, yearling type cattle many of which are destined for a summer at grass. With a great crowd of buyers in attendance from all over the UK these types whilst not as fiery as the autumn sales still met strong demand and a large proportion sold well in excess of four figures.
