Hexham Auction Mart

Hexham & Northern Marts had forward a catalogued entry of 610 Store Cattle & Suckled Calves for their weekly sale, an increase of over 100 head on the same sale last year.

As has been the norm during January over three quarters of the entry was made up of older cattle at 16 months and over and a good crowd gathered once again for these sorts.

Having seen some fearsome trades at this centre earlier in the month for these older, forward types resistance round the ringside was apparent due largely to falling deadweight prices and shifting ceilings on upper weight limits on cattle marketed in such a manner.

Despite this easier trade the best end of cattle continued to sell well irrespective of age and the sale peaked at £1510 for a cracking Charolais cross bred steer at 20 months from Lewis Forster, West Nubbuck, Hexham.

Philip Tomlinson, Sunniside, Consett, Co. Durham continued with another of his annual offerings of top quality cattle and peaked at £1490 and £1460 for Charolais and Limousin crosses respectively.

A highlight of the sale were the run of 18 traditionally presented and over wintered Limousin cross bred bullocks at 20 months from Mark Linkleter, West Kirkheaton. The well grown, framey sorts were shown in great ‘store’ condition and peaked at £1410 for a sizeable pen of five which courted a great deal of interest from several buyers.

With a greater proportion of Limmy cross types on offer Charolais finishers were left wanting however a nice pair of these steers from new consignor David Bell, Low Houses, Low Row, Carlisle sold well at 20 months to realise £1335 going home with Tommy Barton of Wigan.

Unlike the forward steer trade heifers in the same bracket were subject to little or no drop on the week and a number of heifer purchasers had returned to the ringside.

Topping the ladies section was a well presented and shapely example from noted producers Messrs Burn, Grange House Farm, Stamfordham which at 18 months sold for £1340 to Mark Wilkinson, Derbyshire.

Just over 150 head of yearling and younger sorts were presented at the end of the catalogue and as happens each week a shift occurred in the faces around the ringside with those looking for short keep cattle making way for longer keep, grazing cattle purchasers.

A great show of quality beef bred calves were put forward and well wintered types continued to sell at the same rates seen previously.

Cattle under ten months of age peaked at £1150 for two Limx bullocks again from Lewis Forster, West Nubbuck followed by another at £1120 from George Stobbs, High Wiserley, Wolsingham, Weardale.
