Hexham & Northern Marts worker Hedley Heron is cycling 2,400 miles in aid of the Great North Air Ambulance.
He will be setting off from his home in Rothbury next Saturday, and, over the course of 16 days, is planning to ride to Lands End, before heading to John O’Groats then undertaking the final stretch back to Northumberland.
Such mammoth fundraising challenges are nothing new to Hedley, who raised £18,000 through a Lands End to John O’Groats ride in 2006.
He said: “I know of a lot of people, friends and farmers, in our area who may not have been here had it not been for the good work that the air ambulance does. The farming and village communities of Northumberland are rural by nature and are often remote and inaccessible in times of emergency and the air ambulance provides a vital lifeline in such situations.”
Hexham & Northern Marts this week held a sale of fat lambs, donated by local farmers, to support the trip and this made more than £1,200 – see the report from Scots Gap.
Anyone who wishes to support Hedley can contact him on 07974 125321 or send donations, marked Hedley’s Big Ride, to Hexham Auction Mart, Hexham, NE46 3SG. Cheques should be made out to Simonside Country Fair.
