Hexham & Northern Marts at their weekly sale had forward a catalogued entry of 376 head of store cattle and suckled calves. A more mixed show of quality than seen previously sold to similar rates topping at £1540 for a fantastic Limousin cross steer at 18 months from Geoff Ogle, Blackburn, Slaley. This was closely followed by a Charolais cross steer from Brother & Sister Robert & Kay Thompson, The Whins, Bishop Auckland which at 24 months sold at £1500.

A noted highlight of the sale was the run of eight well-bred and presented limmy cross bullocks from Messrs Cuthbert, Brinkheugh, Longhorsley which peaked at £1490 to average a mighty £1405 throughout. These sold exceptionally well at 20 to 21 months of age, finding new homes locally in Northumberland but also further afield with similarly regular purchasers from both Yorkshire, Wigan & Warrington.

Whilst forward sorts under thirty months of age continue to sell very well at Hexham those over 30 months also leave good returns and this was illustrated by heifers at £1425 from Messrs Bell, Woodhall, Bardon Mill and at £1330 from Ed Arthur, Kirkley March, Ponteland.

As numbers tighten in the run up to Christmas cattle of all age classes find a ready ringside of buyers at this centre with a great consignment of 20 ‘top-end’ Limousin calves at 12-15 months of age from noted breeders the Walton family of Greyside, Fourstones, Hexham selling to a top of £1305 for steers and £1260 for heifers, averaging £1186 throughout.

Similarly a great run of 20 hill bred, spring born Charolais cross calves at eight and nine months attracted a lot of interest for owners Robbie & Paul Coulson, High Staward which peaked at £1135 for a tremendous bullock calf with bags of shape, style and oodles of potential.
