A Sunderland firm is preparing for expansion after becoming one of only three UK firms selected to offer specialised rapid chargers for the electric vehicle sector.

Elm EV, which installs electric vehicle charge points, recently announced plans to move into the commercial market, following its success with systems in homes across the region.

Since then, it has been approached by French firm DBT, a global leader in the manufacture of charging points, which selected the business as one of only three certified companies in the country to install and programme its rapid charge points.

Elm EV will have sole responsibility for installations and programming from the Borders to Cumbria.

The company is already gearing itself up for expansion as it takes on the new work, which could ultimately save businesses across the region thousands of pounds as they reduce their carbon footprints.

Anthony Piggott, technical director at Elm EV said: “We are very proud to be able to offer this product and service to our customers.

“Being an accredited installer and programmer of this rapid charging unit means we can deliver the most cost effective solution to our client.

“So from install to programming and maintenance we can do the whole lot meaning companies save a substantial amount of money as opposed to bringing people in at different stages of the process.

“As a company, our aim has always been to provide the most cost effective solutions to our customers and with this certification we are able to do exactly that.”

The DBT unit - available to large-scale commercial businesses - is one of the most reliable chargers on the market and can charge in as little as 20-30 minutes.

Already, the ELM EV team has travelled to France for a two day training programme on installing the high specification charging units, as well as technical programming to ensure they perform to the expected standards.

Piggott added: “Elm EV install only the highest quality charge points, from the most reputable manufacturers.

“The DBT unit is our flagship model and it is extremely popular with our customers.

“By installing this system, not only is a business placed on the electric vehicle map network as an available charging resource, but many of our customers have also taken advantage of adding a tariff to their system, thereby benefitting from an additional revenue stream, whilst also increasing footfall to their business.”
