70 Cast Cows sold to 179ppk or £1201 per head (av.135ppk)

2 Stock Bulls sold to 154ppk or £1475 per head (av.152ppk)

38 Young Bulls sold to £1180 per head (av.£729)

62 Store Steers sold to £1400 per head (av.£856)

Cast cattle  – a stronger trade altogether this week was seen in the cast cattle ring, a nice Shorthorn cow from P Prudom & Son topped the trade at 179ppk selling to R & K Lunn. Leading gross value of the day was £1475 for a 6 year old Stabiliser Bull from J&P Ward, top priced cow was a British Blue from KBS&AL Roche reaching £1201. A better selection of Dairy Cows this week and an improving trade witnessed them gross over £1000 on 7 separate occasions.

Store & breeding cattle  – once again a ring full of buyers saw the store and breeding cattle very much in demand, leading price in the breeders went to a 12 year old Lincoln Red cow with a very smart 2 month old Limousin Heifer Calf at foot consigned by J D Bentley & Son, she sold to T J ball for £1240. The young bulls followed and leading price was £1180 for a 23 month old Hereford from Messes Beckwith. Highlight in the store section was definately a fantastic pen of 10 very strong Aberdeen Angus Steers from E A & N Thompson & Son twice they peaked at £1400 and all sold for over £1180. Top priced heifer was a Limousin from W Dent selling for £1060.

Store & breeding sheep: Numbers are now starting to come forward, the trade for store lambs appears to be similar if not slightly stronger than 2012 however first impressions of the breeding trade are that trade may not be just as fast. Over 1000 store lambs on offer sold to a top of £78 for a pair of huge lambs from J W & B Firby, strong lambs regularly made in the low £60's and smaller running lambs could be bought in the late £40's to early £50's. A run of smart suffolk ewe lambs sold between £58 & £68. Breeding ewes sold up to £125 for some strong suffolk half bred 2 and 3 croppers. A run of smart Texel X Mule shearling ewes from M H Petch Limited sold between £110 & £122.

BORDER, w/e August 9

Border Livestock Exchange Ltd   sold 91 prime cattle including 29 cows; 2,491 prime lambs; 484 ewes and 2,040 store lambs.

Cattle trade eased slightly with numbers of cattle really beginning to tighten. Aberdeen Angus cross steers from Fenwick Steads, Belford sold to 450p per kg to Well Hung & Tender, Berwick. Continental cross heifers sold to 410p per kg with steers selling also to 410p per kg.

Lambs sold particularly well for export weights, with a shortage of heavy lambs, premiums were available for up to 25kgs. Export weights sold to 410p per kg for Continental crosses and £91.35 per head.

Store lambs started this week with large numbers being keenly offered for by regular buyers in the South of England. 

WIGTON, August 8

Hopes Auction Co Ltd  held their sale of OTM Cattle when there was forward an entry of 78 cattle. 

As expected a smaller entry but still almost double from this time last year.  Trade sharper than expected with demand for all classes. 

The show for OTM Cattle was  sponsored by Simon Huntington, Land Rover and Car Sales and Service, Wigton. The judging was carried out by George Ireland and he selected as Champion a British Blue Cow from JP Graham & Son, The Wreay, Wigton which sold for 213.5p per kg.

The best dairy sired animal was awarded to J Paisley & Sons, Oulton House for a 720 kgs Friesian Cow which sold for 138.5 p per kg.

The top price per head was £1883.28 paid to Messrs Bowe, Mechi Farm, Blennerhasset for a Blonde D’Aquitaine Bull

Dairy Bred sold to 150.5p paid for a Friesian Cow from TH & MI Huddleston & Son, The Green, Longtown
