Darlington Farmers’ Auction Mart held their weekly sale of Store and Breeding Stock, forward were 247 Cattle.

75 Cast Cattle sold to 190ppk or £1546 per head; 43 Store Heifers sold to £930 per head; 52 Store Steers sold to £975 per head; 37 Young Bulls sold to £980 per head; 22 Breeding Cattle sold to £1460; 18 Calves & Stirks sold to £410

Cast cattle - The market averaged a very impressive 119 pence per kilo and with over 1/3 of them dairy cows the trade was firmer than we have seen over the past few weeks. A & R Thompson of Dimmingdale Farm, Moorsholm set the pace when his run of Limousin Cows 4 times sold over 150ppk to a mighty top price of 190ppk. The leading gross value for a cow also went to the same home when an 8 year old sold for £1069, a mountain of a Saler Bull shown by T Marshall, The Meadows later in the sale grossed a huge £1546. Dairy Cows sold regularly between 110ppk and 120ppk to a top of 124ppk from Barton Rose Holsteins, Richmond.

Store cattle - A typical midsummer show of mixed goods met with yet another tremendous trade. A 3 year old Simmental Heifer with her Angus Bull Calf at foot from J M Walker, Picton Grange sold for £1460 as his impressive run sold on 4 occasions over £1300. Steers sold to £975 for a Limousin from J Butterfield & Son, Bluestone Farm and Heifers to £930 from M J Hutchinson, Red Gap Farm with a shapely Charollais. Young bulls aged 12 & 14 months from K & T Wilson, Pontac Farm twice sold for £980 and Stirks peaked at £410 for a 4 month old Angus from B R & S Fell of Nafferton Farm.
