A multi-million pound flooring company which helped stage the 2012 Olympics has secured premises in Darlington to expand its operation.

After rapid growth over the past 12 months, Signature Systems Europe Ltd has relocated to a new flagship warehouse and office facility off Haughton Road, Darlington, with help from North Yorkshire-based property development company Landteam.

Signature is a subsidiary of Signature Systems Group, LLC, New York, a major manufacturer of temporary flooring.

Its products include carpet, artificial turf, heavy-duty access mats and permanent gym flooring, as well as vehicular and pedestrian trackway, of which it supplied more than 2,000,000 sq feet to the 2012 Olympics at 27 venues across London.

Signature Systems UK director Tony Booth, 37, said: “Our initial contact with Landteam was through Nick Appleyard with whom we leased a small warehouse and offices at Morton Park.

“We also had a large warehouse facility in Essex but on completion of the Olympic contract we wanted to relocate the whole operation back to one location in Darlington, so asked Appleyard to look for a larger facility that could accommodate our growing staff and warehouse requirements.

“Our requirements were not only for warehouse and office space but also for an outdoor facility to increase our storage capacity.

“Landteam was great to work with and, thanks to Appleyard and his team, we now have 11,000 sq ft of indoor space and an additional 10,000 sq ft of outdoor enclosed secure facility.”

Appleyard added: “Signature Systems UK is a fantastic company doing some amazing work around the world and it’s great for Darlington that we can offer the kind of facilities to attract businesses like this and that meet their needs.”

Signature’s 10-year lease ensures the continuity of its commitment to trading in Darlington with the possibility of further expansion into adjoining premises to cope with business demand.

“We have some major contracts this summer including providing the Stade de France with flooring for seven major pop concerts, including Rihanna, Bruce Springsteen and Eminem,” said Booth.

“Darlington is a great distribution point, being more or less exactly in the centre of the United Kingdom and Landteam has proved it can deliver responsively and on time to our needs.

“Long-term we will also be looking to open a depot north of the M25.”

As well as supplying major sporting events and concert venues, Signature sells and hires modular flooring and fencing products to the construction, energy and exploration industries, the military, disaster relief agencies, exhibitions and trade shows.
