A NEW Asda Supermarket in Redcar has opened its doors following a £500,000 conversion from a Netto store.

Jane Reast and Stephen Proudman, director and chairman of Redcar and Cleveland Real Opportunity Centre, were invited to open the store on Roseberry Road by manager Chris Willett. They were presented with a £50 gift card to thank them for officially cutting the ribbon.

ROC’s Independent Living Resource Hub, based on Coatham Road, offers a range of support and advice to people living with disabilities in the Redcar community.

The new Asda will join 13 Netto conversions that have already opened in the Newcastle, Sunderland and Middlesbrough areas, with a further store opening in Northallerton on Tuesday 14 November – a total of £7 million investment in the area and the creation of 190 jobs between them.

The store is part of the retail giant’s plan to have 250 Asda Supermarkets open by 2015.

Chris Willett, store manager for Asda Redcar, said: “It’s been really exciting being involved in this new project for Asda. We wanted to bring the convenience of the supermarket to the high street, giving customers the opportunity to complete a full shop in our new, smaller stores.”
