Cast Cows & OTM Cattle – A great show of 180 cast cows and stock bulls were forward with a keen ring side of buyers ensuring that all classes would be 10-12p up on the week. Messrs J Knight, Low Meadows run of outstanding cows topped at 167.5 for a Limousin cross purchased by Cleveland Meats. Messrs G Johnston & Son, Orton Hall sold the top priced Blonde cow selling for 732kg, 164.5 £1204 bought by Owain Llyr. Messrs Beattie Shield Green sold the top overall priced British Blue cross cow selling for 841kg, 156.5, £1316 to Charles Kirkpatrick. Mr I T Goldie, Greenfield sold the top priced Charolais cow selling for 158.5p to Cleveland Meats. All classes of black and white cows were up 10p–12p on the week. Messrs J & G Swainson, How End Farm sold the top priced Holstein cross cow selling for 138.5p again to Cleveland Meats. Messrs RH & J Irving, Meinbank Farm sold the top overall priced Holstein x cow selling for 855 kg, 122.5p £1047 to Dawn Meats.

Prime Cattle – Although this was Bank Holiday Monday, the weekly sale of nearly 60 Prime cattle was presented whereby most classes sold slightly dearer on the week. The day’s top of £1624.86 was achieved by Mr Lawson, Kirkland Green, Wigton for what he said is the best Limousin steer he has ever sold. Mr Lawson also achieved top pence per kilo with this bullock at 229.5ppk and was purchased by Pioneer Foods, Carlisle, who also bought one of the joint top pence per kilo heifers at 220.5 from vendors Messrs Morton, Church Farm, Penrith and also Messrs Fawcett, Silver How Farm, Gosforth, with their Bazadaise and Limousin crosses with the other purchased by Whittaker Butchers Ltd, The Butchers Shop, Accrington.

Prime Bulls – Yet another huge show of Prime bulls forward whereby all classes sold dearer on the week. The sale was topped by a Charolais bull for first time vendors to the centre Mr P Janoch, South Leckaway, Forfar achieving £1677.39. Top pence per kilo of 213.5p was achieved by Messrs Lawson, Kirkland Green, Wigton, with his Limousin cross. A plainer show of black and whites types were forward with a top price of 153.5ppk from weekly vendors Messrs Mitchell, Mirkbooths, Raughton Head and in return also gained top price per head of £1162. More could have been sold.

Prime Sheep – All classes of sheep sold to extreme rates, leaving all vendors delighted. A larger entry of prime lambs met a fantastic enquiry resulting in an overall average of 257.36p (SQQ 259.86p). Topping the sale at £137.80 was a tremendous Texel cross lamb consigned by Messrs D Watters of Mill House, Gamblesby which sold to Mr R Skelton. Topping per kilo was a truly outstanding pen of four 37kg Texel cross lambs shown by Messrs JA & LA Thompson of Wood Head, Scaleby which sold at 307.6p/kg (£113.80) to Bowood Yorkshire Lamb Ltd. A small sample of hogs were forward and were keenly bid for to a top of £125.80 for two Texel cross hogs consigned by Messrs BJ&JG Hodgson of Woodend Farm, Egremont selling to Bowood Yorkshire Lamb Ltd. Messrs R Mark of Sunny Gill topped pence per kilo at 234.5p for Texel hoggs to Mr R Skelton.

Harrison & Hetherington held their weekly sale of ewes and lambs which saw a smaller show of 486 due to the Bank Holiday. All classes of ewes and lambs met a buoyant trade with a large ringside of buyers looking for all types. The sale was topped at £108 for hoggs and lambs from D & R Cornthwaite, Balgray, Lockerbie with Texel x hoggs with Beltex lambs at foot. More could have been sold to vendors’ advantage.

All classes were good to sell with an excellent ring side of buyers ensuring all calves were well bid for. Top price of the day was from a run of calves from R G & W Whitfield Ltd, Balladoyle Farm, Silloth topping at £490 for an excellent Limousin bull. Mr Whitfield’s calves went on to average £422.50. More buyers were forward for black and white calves ensuring a better trade than previous weeks. 180 dairy bulls averaged out at £74.50. Top price was £170 for a British Friesian from Messrs Storr, Fir Tree Farm, Silloth.
