STORE & BREEDING SHEEP

On Monday 12th May at Borderway Mart, Harrison & Hetherington held their weekly sale of store and breeding sheep. The annual show and sale of hogs and shearlings saw a tremendous show forward. Top honours of the mules went to Messrs Ridsdale of Yew Tree Farm, selling at £115. The show was ably judged by Messrs Irving of East Cliffe. Reserve Champion went to Messrs Skelton of Rook Farm selling to £70 with twins at foot. Continental cross section was kindly judged by Messrs Bowe of Bothel Parks who presented the champion rosette to a pen of Texel cross hogs to Messrs Pattinson of Kinkry Hill and Reserve Champion went Messrs Horn of Whale Farm which sold to £122 and £130 respectfully. All classes were kindly sponsored by John Scott Minerals. Out with the show top call went to Messrs Bell of Fitz Farm selling to £124 for a Texel ewe and lamb. All types were keenly bid for throughout.

At Borderway Mart Carlisle, on Monday 12th May Harrison &amp; Hetherington held their weekly sale of primestock.

Cast Cows &amp; OTM Cattle – A large show of 252 cast cows and stock bulls were presented to a large ring side of buyers with black and white cows being much improved on the week, and feeding cows being in great demand. Messrs Cleasby of Linden House run of outstanding cows topped at 165.5ppk for a Limousin cross purchased by Charles Kirkpatrick. Messrs Sowerby &amp; Sons of Sycamore Rise cows topped at 158.5ppk and was purchased by Mr Shaun McGimpsey. Messrs Edgar of Fellside Farm sold a pure Limousin cow for 157.5ppk to Mr Anthony Holmes. Mr Oliver of Cawfields cows topped at 156.5ppk twice and were purchased by Charles Kirkpatrick and Shaun McGimpsey. Mr Andrew Jefferson of Aspatria Hall sold the top priced Charolais cross cow, selling to 797kg, 156.5ppk or £1247 and was purchased by Charles Kirkpatrick. Messrs Cleasby of Linton House sold the top priced Limousin cow selling to 878kg, 139.5ppk of £1224 and was purchased by Pickstocks. Messrs Hebson of Town End Farm sold the top priced black and white cow selling for 132.5ppk to Mr Shaun McGimpsey. Messrs Taylor of High Whinnow Farm sold the top priced Holstein cross cow selling for 882kg, 127.5ppk of £1124 to Dawn Meats.

Stock bulls were in great demand, Messrs Whitfield of Balladoyle Farm sold a Limousin bull for 145.5ppk and was purchased by Mr Shaun McGimpsey. Messrs Telfer of Tarnflatt Hall sold the top overall priced Limousin stock bull selling to 1284kg, 141,5ppk of £1816 and was purchased by Pickstocks.

Prime Cattle – One of the largest shows of 84 prime cattle were forward, with even more new vendors returning back to Borderway taking full advantage of the mart’s ring. Top overall was the best bullock seen at Carlisle for some time, achieving top price of £1809.66 was a Limousin cross from Messrs Crichton of Loughrigg, Egremont, this one off bullock was knocked down to Pioneer Foods. Top pence per kilo was once again a tremendous Limousin cross heifer from Messrs Fawkes of Welton Farm, Welton achieving 227.5ppk and finally Messrs Crichton of Loughrigg also sold the top overall heifer achieving £1709.78 for a Charolais cross. More could have been sold, and second rate cattle looking sharper on the week.

Prime Bulls – An outstanding show of 139 prime bulls were forward with the well fleshed sorts selling well. Top overall was a tremendous British blue bull from Messrs Retson of Gardrum, Gretna achieving £1536.85 and top overall pence per kilo came from Messrs Eve of Stubbsgill, Aspatria selling his Limousin to 211.5ppk. Black and Whites topped at £999.18 from Messrs Musgrave of Cardew Hall, Dalston and top pence per kilo of 143.5ppk from Messrs Coulthard of Justicetown, Longtown.
