Cast Cows & OTM Cattle – A larger show of 220 cast cows and stock bulls were forward with a great ring side of buyers for feeding cows ensuring one of the dearest trades seen for some time, however black and white cows sold less on the week. Mr Nelson of Low Sorbies sold the top priced British Blue cross cow selling to 183.5p/kg and was purchased by Mr Shaun McGimpsey. Messes Sowerby & Sons of Sycamore Rise run of outstanding cows topped at 181.5p/kg for a Limousin cross purchased by Wesley Gracey of Aberdeen. Messrs Brown & Son of Crakeplace Hall, Workington sold two great Limousin cows selling for 179.5p/kg and 173.5p/kg and were purchased by Shaun McGimpsey and Les Fell. Messrs Prentice & Son of Hermitage Farm run of great feeding cows topped at 168.5ppk for a British Blue cross purchased by Charles Kirkpatrick. Messrs Hyslop of Placeknowe sold the top priced Simmental cow scaling 821kg and sold to 168p/kg or £1383 and was purchased by Mr Charles Kirkpatrick. Messrs Sowerby & Sons of Sycamore Rise sold the top priced Limousin cross cow, weighing 788kg and sold to 164.5p/kg or £1296 and was purchased by Mr Alan Jarvis. Mr Scott of Carrick Dean sold the top priced Holstein cross cow selling to 137.5p/kg and was purchased by Mr Les Fell. Messrs Armour of Milton Farm sold the top priced Holstein cross cow selling to 913kg, 110.5p/kg, £1008 to Dawn Meats. Messrs Prudham of Whitefield sold the top priced Charolais stock bull selling to 1289kg, 119.5p/kg or £1540.36 to Pickstocks.

Prime Cattle – A larger show of 67 prime cattle forward with all classes selling to a similar trade on the week. The days overall top was an outstanding Limousin cross steer from Messrs Crichton of Loughrigg Farm, selling to £1790.10 or 229.50p/kg purchased by Pioneer Foods. Top overall heifer was again a Limousin cross achieving £1401.35 from Messrs Fawcett of Silverhow, Seascale, which also achieved top pence per kilo of 231.50p/kg and was again purchased by Pioneer Foods. A strong trade was seen throughout with all vendors leaving satisfied.

And finally Black and Whites were forward in good numbers although there was less quality and flesh on offer. Top overall was a Holstein Friesian from Messrs Lindsay of High Crosby Farm, Crosby Moor achieving £1051.35 and top pence per kilo came from Messrs Mitchell of Mirkbooths, Raughton Head achieving 158.50p/kg.

Prime Sheep – A better quality offering of spring lambs were forward and met a good demand to a top of £130.80 paid for a fabulous 45kg Texel shown by Messrs Reed of Moss Side House, Newton Arlosh which sold to Mr John Scott Meat Ltd, Paisley this was also the top price per kilo at 290.70p/kg. A good turnout of hoggs again this week, however a very mixed quality show as vendors approach the end of their runs. Topping the sale was a 52kg Texel hogg shown by Mr S Skelton of Newhall which sold at £120.80 to Mr J Thompson. Top price per kilo was 282.9p/kg paid for Beltex hoggs again from Newhall weighing 42kg they sold at £118.80 to Mr T England on behalf of a client.
