Hopes Auction Co, Wigton held their weekly sale of Primestock when there was an entry of 75 Cattle, 38 Bulls, and 1901 Prime Sheep including 308 Ewes.Cattle sold at similar rates to recent weeks with a keen ringside of buyers in attendance.

The top price of 233.5p per kg was paid for a Limousin Heifer shown by DA Harrison, The Old Vicarage, Westnewton and was purchased by Top Deal Meats, Denton Holme, Carlisle. The top price per head for heifers was £1463.93 for another Limousin also shown by DA Harrison, The Old Vicarage.

Steers sold to a top price of 221.5p for a British Blue shown by JG & M Little, Greenhill Farm, Wigton. Top price of £1425.63 was paid for a Limousin Steer shown by D Anderson, Crosby House Farm, Maryport.

Bulls met another marvellous trade especially so when compared with alternatives. More could have been well sold. Bulls sold to 208.5p for a Limousin from DW & DM Elliott, Bank House, Mungrisedale, Penrith. The top price per head was £1586.70 paid for a Limousin Bull shown by Messrs Hewetson, Scales Hall, Calthwaite, Penrith.

Prime ewes – 308. Another record show of ewes in this growing centre met a sharp demand with all classes well bid for resulting in another tremendous trade. Top today £139 for a Texel ewe from Messrs Harrison, Down Hall, Aikton. A larger entry of Mules sold to £79 for Messrs Pears, Fellside House, Caldbeck; and fell sheep reached a high of £65 for Swaledales from Messrs J & C Hickson, Beck Grange, Caldbeck.

Hopes Auction Co Ltd held their sale of Over Thirty Months Cattle when there was forward an entry of 94 cattle.

A tremendous trade for all classes with the larger entry well sold. Vendors are encouraged to take advantage of the premium prices being achieved at this centre with the beef bred cows averaging a wonderful 148.34p and the overall average levelling at 134.62p

Top price today 185.5p for a British Blue cow from Messrs AD & A Richardson, Low Bank End, Appleby. This fantastic specimen also realised the top gross at £1458.03. Dairy bred sold to a tremendous176.5p for a Friesian from Messrs Paisley, Oulton House, Oulton.
