One of the North East’s best-known and highly-regarded client advisers, Vinay Bedi, has joined the team at UBS Wealth Management in Newcastle as an executive director.

His appointment comes at a buoyant time for the office, as UBS’s regional operations are experiencing rapid growth, with invested assets increasing by 49% during the past four years.

“I was impressed by UBS Wealth Management’s Global House View and the disciplined way in which this steers and sensibly controls investment strategies in discretionary and advisory portfolios,” Bedi said.

“The team in Newcastle has significant experience and expertise, so it is exciting for me to join when it is poised for further expansion.”

Born in Durham, Bedi, who lives near Teesside, began his career in Manchester as a research analyst specialising in smaller companies. In 1988, he joined Wise Speke in Newcastle, becoming a director at the age of 28.

While with the company, he was heavily involved in the flotation of Manchester United in 1991, becoming the city’s first football analyst.

When Wise Speke was sold to Brewin Dolphin in 1998, he moved to the asset management division, focussing on major charities, pension funds and high net worth private clients in the North East.

UBS is one of the world’s leading financial firms. In the UK and Jersey, it employs more than 850 people across seven offices. The company was named best UK private bank in the 2013 Euromoney Private Banking awards.

Jonathan Brown, head of regions for UBS Wealth Management UK, said: “Vinay joins us as our robust investment process continues to attract clients to UBS Wealth Management.

“The quality of our client advisors is second-to-none and they are held in high regard by our charity, pension fund and high net worth clients in the North East.”

Nick Tucker, UBS Wealth Management UK’s head of domestic, said: “We are in a unique position to respond to our clients’ need for global investment expertise and insight on their doorstep.”

Bedi’s appointment follows January’s arrival of Andrew Elliott, also as an executive director.
