Champagne corks were popping when a Newcastle-based production and communications company scooped two prestigious awards at an industry awards event - at its first time of entering.

R&B Group was one of five businesses vying for the title in the AV Awards competition.

Projection mapping technology work it provided for The Journal’s North East Business of the Year awards took the Best Live Event of the Year – beating off strong competition from rivals who had staged Olympic events.

And if that wasn’t enough, R&B also took the overall Grand Prix Award for their innovation, technology and general good business practices in the glittering award ceremony in a top London hotel.

Antony Crerar, development director at R&B Group projects team, said: “I had decided that the team behind the event should go to London rather than the directors, as they were the ones who’d created the amazing event.

“So on the evening I was waiting for the news coming through. When my phone rang and I was told we’d won Best Live Event of the Year, I simply couldn’t believe it. I quickly called my co-director and some of the senior management team to tell them the good news. I hadn’t finished these excited conversations when my phone rang again.

“This time the noise was even louder; we’d won the overall Grand Prix award! I was literally speechless for a few moments as it sunk in.

“We’ve decorated the offices and been celebrating all day – things like this don’t come around very often so we are making the most of it. Everyone is in such a great mood and I do feel this could be a launch-pad for our business.”

R&B Group works with organisations nationwide providing an extensive range of event, production and communication services, from live event support, creative event design, branding and conference presentation creation to video production, set design and build, speech writing and speaker coaching.

Its clients include a wide range of blue-chip, public sector and not-for-profit organisations, among them Nissan and Sage plc in the North East, the Royal College of Nursing, Morrisons, the Chartered Institute of Housing, Komatsu and the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors.

It was established 21 years ago and currently employs 29 full-time staff. The firm is planning to recruit more technical staff in Newcastle and Yorkshire within the next couple of months.
