Industry giant Tata Steel has opened the UK's largest profiling centre for steel plate in the UK as part of a series of investments.

The new £3.1m Profiling Centre, at Steelpark in Wednesfield, will increase its plate processing capacity in the West Midlands by up to 50%.and enhances the firm’s ability to supply plate that has been cut and finished to exact size, shape and quality specifications.

The centre’s opening comes three months after the firm, which employs 1,500 on Teesside, announced plans yesterday to axe 40 jobs in the North East and hundreds more UK-wide, as part of a major restructure.

Some 40 jobs within Tata’s Long Products business – mainly in management and administration – were affected at its Redcar and Skinningrove sites and a further 430 positions were be affected in Scunthorpe and in Workington.

The new facility amalgamates Tata Steel’s plate cutting and machining capability into one place, and Paul Steele, managing director at Tata Steel Distribution UK and Ireland, said the investment is one of a series of developments the firm is making that is strengthening Steelpark’s position as one of the key foundations for UK manufacturing.

He said: We are transforming the UK’s largest steel service centre into an operation that is entirely focused on meeting customer requirements and supporting their success.

“We have a unique ability to support our customers because of our Tata Steel ownership, which makes us the only steel distribution group to have both its mill and processing operations in the UK and Ireland.”
