Two County Durham businesses have been acquired by a major Swiss multinational.
MIS Environmental Ltd and MIS Testing Ltd – both based in Consett, with additional offices in Manchester and Livingston – have been taken on by SGS, recognised as the world’s leading inspection, verification, testing and certification company.
The acquisitions were marked with a launch that attracted more than 70 guests, including MP for North West Durham, Pat Glass, who unveiled a commemorative plaque.
Founded in 1982, MIS Environmental Ltd works in asbestos, environmental, and health and safety testing, as well as consultancy services. It employs 72 people and is expected to generate 2013 revenues of £4.2m. MIS Testing, meanwhile, offers mechanical and material testing and employs 55. Its 2013 revenues are likely to hit £3.7m.
SGS has more than 1,650 sites around the world, with over 80,000 employees.
The group’s chief executive Chris Kirk said: “I am very pleased with these two acquisitions. The United Kingdom is a very important and growing market for SGS.
“I am convinced we will further strengthen our market position and add new services to our British portfolio.”
