WHEN it comes to increasing the skills of its workforce, food ingredients manufacturer and supplier, Kerry Sweet Ingredients Ltd, gives employee development serious food for thought.
As the winner of the CoLaS Awards 2009 Small Employer of the Year award – sponsored by Stockton Riverside College – the company has a proactive approach to training. This includes enrolling over 20 production employees at its Newton Aycliffe site near Darlington on an NVQ at Level 2 in Food Manufacturing, with support from the Train to Gain service and Darlington College.
The move has been a tremendous success and is particularly important for a firm which operates in such a competitive marketplace. Noticeable improvements in staff morale and motivation, as well as increased productivity, have been recorded since the training began.
With two thirds of the workforce taking up the training offered to them, up until now many had never had the opportunity to go into further or higher education. As a result, they are relishing the chance to increase their skills. Their enthusiasm is also rubbing off on their colleagues who haven’t yet taken part, but who are now keen to work towards a qualification themselves.
