A scientist turned teacake-maker is a sweet sensation after seeing her products on the shelves of Newcastle retailer Fenwick.

Casey Lam, founder of TopHat Teacakes was crowned winner of The Journal’s If We Can You Can Challenge (IWCYC) run by the Entrepreneurs’ Forum earlier this year. She also won the regional universities’ Blueprint business competition with her brand.

Lam, a self-taught baker, who is studying for a PhD in chemistry at Durham University, said: “I took part in the Fenwick farmers’ market in July and got some good feedback. Their food buyer Adam Barber told me they really liked the product and has been very encouraging and approachable.

“But they wanted me to do some more work on the packaging so it fitted better with the shop.

“Up to that point, I’d just been buying standard cartons from a catalogue but I realised I needed something more bespoke so researched it and since then have radically overhauled how TopHat Teacakes are presented.”
