A NORTH East creative company has beaten competition from the rest of Europe to win a contract with a £1bn Portuguese company.

Sunderland-based Surreal Creative has been employed by Sonae Indústria, one of the world’s largest producers of wood-based decorative materials, with annual revenues over £1bn and about 5,500 staff on 29 sites in eight countries.

Surreal won the contract to develop a single brand for Sonae Indústria to initially launch into Germany, France and the UK.

Managing director Ian Smith and his team came up with Innovus, a name with Latin connotations designed to not only convey the contemporary and creative nature of the products it was attached to, but also work well in different markets and cultures.

Thanks to the contract, Surreal is now recruiting to add to its team of seven. Ian Smith, managing director of Surreal Creative, said: “Having only been established for four years, working with Sonae Indústria has been a fantastic experience for everyone.

“In such unpredictable economic times, this is great news for Surreal Creative and a feather in the cap for the North East’s creative industry.”

Christophe Chambonnet, chief marketing and sales officer at Sonae Indústria, said: “The team at Surreal Creative really impressed us on a number of levels. The Innovus concept really captured the essence of our product line and has so far met with a great response across Europe.”
