A young entrepreneur is building up to a successful first year in business after establishing men’s salon Wilson Barbershop Co in South Gosforth, Newcastle.

Robyn Wilson (22), who trained with the L’oréal Academy, has seen a significant uptake in custom since opening in September 2013 and has recently taken on another staff member.

Initially training to become a hairdresser at 17, Wilson realised ladies’ salons were not for her and began studying International Business and Spanish at Northumbria University. However, she has since deferred entry to her second year, allowing her to get her business off the ground.

“Everything has happened so quickly – I haven’t had time to stop and think about it,” she said.

“I’ve always preferred the cutting to the colouring, and men’s hair in general. So I gave myself a year to make a go of it, and haven’t looked back since.”
