GATESHEAD-based STP Construction Ltd has won a £4m contract from UK Land Estates for the design and build of the second phase of Gateshead College’s Skills Academy for Construction at Team Valley.

It is building the central hub of the skills academy, which will include new sports and social facilities, including a fitness centre, all-weather pitches, a cafe and courtyard seating areas.

The facility is designed to be one of the most energy efficient and sustainable of its type in the region and will be built using environmentally friendly construction methods.

The latest low energy-rated materials will be used to reduce the building's carbon footprint, while new features like rainwater reclamation systems will be introduced to cut down on its reliance on mains water consumption.

Other green building features will include a facility for the installation of a roof-based solar panel and PV system technology to improve energy. The contract is due for completion by the end of the year by Rowlands Gill-based STP.

Adrian Bartle, construction director of UK Land Estates, said: “We are delighted to be appointing STP Construction again to build the next phase of a teaching facility that will be at the forefront of building technology. We hope the new facility and the excellent staff at Gateshead College will create and mould the sustainable builders of the future.”

John Smailes, managing director of STP Construction, said: “Having undertaken the initial phase of this development, we are delighted to be working with UK Land Estates and Gateshead College to finally complete this prestigious facility.”
