SSI workers on Teesside have celebrated the arrival of the first historic steel slab shipment to Prachuap Port.

The shipment of 48,000 tonnes steel slabs is valued at just over £19m. They will be used as raw material for SSI Bangsaphan’s hot-rolled coil production, bringing vital raw material stability for SSI.

Ms Wanna Tangcharoenching, Vice President of Commercial Division of Sahaviriya Steel Industries, together with executives and staff welcomed the first lot of 48,000 tonnes produced by SSI Teesside and shipped by the container vessel Blue Fin. The shipment arrived at Prachuap Port in Bangsaphan on schedule.

Ms Tangcharoenching said: “This first steel slab shipment to Thailand is another significant milestone reached by SSI. This event not only symbolises our first step towards becoming a world class steel manufacturer, but also signifies the fighting spirit of SSI and our people and proves that “anything is possible.”
