A North East insurance broker has been honoured with a rare accolade.

Willard Wright, managing director of Walter Wright Insurance Brokers Ltd in Gosforth, Newcastle, was given a distinguished service award from the awards panel of the Chartered Insurance Institute (CII) at Aldermanbury, London. This is only the third time in 118 years this award has been given.

Wright was given the honour in recognition of his outstanding dedication and long-term contribution to training, development and professionalism in insurance, as well as his commitment to the local institute.

Maree Hall of the CII said: “He is an inspiration to the insurance institute and to others in his profession. The Insurance Institute of Newcastle has benefited greatly from Willard’s outstanding service for 22 years, as a former president, its current treasurer for over 10 years, and as a member of its council. Willard may be better known by some for his appearances on local television news and radio to discuss current insurance issues such as the flash flooding in 2012. He is also well-known locally for his fundraising efforts for charity.’’

Wright added: “I feel honoured to receive such an award from the heart of the world’s insurance industry in London, and I hope that it brings credit to the considerable efforts of the North East insurance industry and in particular the 1500 members of its insurance institute.”

The aim of the Insurance Institute is to raise professional standards in insurance by running professional examinations, providing technical and regulatory seminars, training courses, career guidance, mentoring and knowledge services, sports, social and networking events and community engagement initiatives.
