BROTHERS Michael and Gareth Bateman have just opened their second wine shop and are preparing to franchise the business they began in Northumberland last year.

Michael, a former manager of the luxury Samling hotel in the Lake District, and his brother have found a keen following for their Wine Boutique shop in Alnwick.

And now they are opening up their second branch, among the food stores and delicatessens at Heighley Gate Garden Centre in Morpeth.

“We were really pleased by how popular the shop in Alnwick has been. It has been phenomenal. So we thought we would open another so people can choose some good wine when they buy their local produce,” said Michael.

And he is in talks with a franchise firm to roll out the brand further afield so more people can discover its distinctive offering.

“We sell a wide range of wines that you can’t get anywhere else in the country and have a real emphasis on service that really comes from what I learned during my time at the Samling,” added Michael.

“We give customers a warm welcome and make sure they are well looked after and we have special tastings and events. There is music and comfortable seating and a very special atmosphere. I think it will work very well as a franchise.”

The brothers’ business was given a publicity boost last year when it opened as The Boutique Wine Company North East and they were taken to court by a London business with a similar name. Now the brand is renamed Wine Boutique and the brothers are confident it will be popular.
