ONLINE trader Mark Berriman has seen his business notch up its best ever month with revenues up 22% in one week putting it on track to achieve annual sales of £6m.

The Jarrow entrepreneur says his Pet Supermarket business is currently recruiting staff after benefiting from a website relaunch.

The Pet Superstore was launched in 2004 and was achieving annual sales of £1.6m by 2005.

Last year it recorded sales of £4.3m and is now well-ahead of that with the goal of hitting of £10m by 2010.

Managing director Berriman is currently recruiting six staff taking total numbers to 23 and these will include sales, marketing and warehouse staff.

He said: “We have rapidly developed to become the market leader in its sector as a result of forging strategic partnerships with leading manufacturers and offering low priced, high quality goods. We now have a class-leading website platform for our customers, which will deliver strong future growth.

“Year on year sales are already up 30% in the first six months of 2010 and we hope we can continue to buck the trend.

“This level of growth, coupled with the anticipated increase in sales, will allow us to create at least six new jobs before the year is out.

“I am delighted to say that some of these jobs will be apprenticeships as I am keen to help young people, especially those from disadvantaged backgrounds, by giving them an opportunity to achieve something.”

Berriman launched the business six years ago after he spotted a gap in the market when he couldn’t find supplies of a specific dog food for his own Labrador Charlie.

Based around the concept of being ‘run by pet lovers for pet lovers,’ much of the store’s success has been based on providing branded products that customers rely on for their pets’ individual requirements, but which they can’t always find in the high street.

It operates in over 60 countries and has established close relationships with some of the UK’s major pet product suppliers.

Andy Reed, retail, breeders and professional sales director of Crown Pet Foods, said: “Pet Supermarket is a well- established and well-known internet pet supplier, and is seen both in the UK and Europe as a major player in the UK market.”

The revamped website accepts the Paypal payment system and the option of express delivery at a date and time of the customer’s choice.

Berriman added: “I am delighted with the new website and I feel this website has given us a solid lead in the pet retail market.”

Berriman, who was named The Journal’s North East young entrepreneur of the year in 2007, also owns luxury gift store Gifts2Drink.co.uk.
