A key milestone has been reached in the construction of an £11m spa extension at a top North East hotel.
Walter Thompson, one of the region’s leading construction companies, has completed the work involved in forming four pools for the luxury spa extension at Ramside Hall Hotel and Golf Club, near Durham.
The expansion is creating 47 new guest bedrooms, and the pools will be a key component of the eagerly-awaited 32,00sq t spa which will open in July.
Paul Hammerton, construction director at Northallerton-based Walter Thompson, which employs more than 250 people, said: “You can really see the spa extension taking shape now and the forming of the pools is a key part of the development.
“They’re all in position now and all they need is rendering and tiling.
“I’m sure guests will be impressed by the size, scale and quality of the pools, and the spa, and we’re proud to be involved in the further development of Ramside Hall.
“It’s been a really interesting job and we’ve had up to 90 local trades operatives from our team on site at times.”
The main pool is 25m in length and has an adjacent children’s pool and spa pool.
There is also a large hexagonal hydrotherapy pool, which will feature recliners, reflexology stations and water canons.
The spa will also feature an outdoor balcony infinity pool and a smaller outdoor therapy pool.
The expansion plans have created a further 100 jobs at Ramside Estates, which already employs 400 people.
John Adamson, managing director of Ramside Estates, said: “The spa will complete our vision for Ramside Hall Hotel and Golf Club to become a complete golf and leisure destination.
“We travelled far and wide for inspiration, looking at spas across the UK, across Europe and beyond and the results will be spectacular.
Other features of the spa include 12 therapy rooms, a gym, a dance studio and a hair salon, a Rasul mud chamber and a new Asian style restaurant and bar.
The spa will be a significant expansion at the four star country house hotel, with the additional bedrooms bringing the total up to 128.
Earlier this year, the hotel also unveiled an additional 18-hole golf course, named the Cathedral Course.
