Structuralsteelwork company Raisco is expanding into the South West after taking on a major contract from a collapsed Welsh firm.

County Durham-based Raisco has completed the refurbishment of a Volkswagen garage in Wales after Newport-based Dudley and Sons plunged into administration in April, with the loss of almost 50 jobs.

With help from Dudley’s former contracts manager Mark Jerman, Raisco took on the semi-completed 12-week project to revamp VW’s Merthyr dealership in South Wales.

Off the back of the motor dealership deal, which was completed on time and on budget, Jerman is now heading up Raisco’s new South West England office as the firm’s construction manager.

Gary Raistrick formed Raisco in 2007 after 17 years in the construction industry and, aged just 33, was named among the Young Business Elite of Great Britain. He has quickly grown the company, doubling turnover two years running to 4m in March 2012.

Raistrick said: “We steadied the growth to March 2013 and consolidated and are now looking to further push our growth through to 2014 and 2015, and have recently increased employment over the last couple of months to take us in excess of 30 full-time staff.

“We’re delighted to welcome Mark on board – the knowledge, experience and contacts he’ll bring to our table will be hugely beneficial.

“We have an excellent, growing workforce and one of the best facilities on Aycliffe Business Park, the second largest industrial estate in the North East, and we have exciting plans to expand in many ways. These are exciting times for the company and we look forward to a bright future as the company branches out into further sectors within the industry.”

Before its collapse, Dudley’s worked for Sainsbury’s as a preferred tier one contractor, and Tesco and Waitrose delivering projects worth up to 18m.

Volkswagen is currently going through a national overhaul, refurbishing 242 dealerships nationwide, but has currently only completed 30.

Jerman is confident Raisco has demonstrated its ability to take on more principal contractor work.
