The Port of Tyne is sponsoring Whitburn Academy's team in the F1 in schools championship.
The initiative, which relies solely on support from industry, sees students create a business plan before designing, making and racing their own cars.
Winning teams in the regional championship will go through to a national event in Birmingham in March.
This is the second time the Port of Tyne has sponsored a team at Whitburn Academy.
Susan Wear, the business’s director of corporate affairs, said: “F1 in schools provides a good opportunity for students to develop a wide range of useful skills in an exciting environment.
“We wish all the teams competing in the regional round the best of luck.”
