North East-based livestock feed company, Northumbrian Quality Feeds, has appointed a new sales and feed adviser to work with livestock farmers across Northumberland and the Scottish borders.

Taking up the newly created position is Nikki Gilbertson, who joins the company from Minsups Ltd, a Winsford-based feed company at which she held the role of field specialist, focusing on minerals and supplements for cattle and sheep.

Founded in 2007 by livestock farmers Stuart and Wendy Hyslop, Northumbrian Quality Feeds produces both organic and conventional ranges of nuts, rolls, pellets, mixtures and blends, which can either be delivered or collected from the company’s North Northumberland coast base.

It caters for customers across Northumberland and the Borders.

In her new role, Ms Gilbertson will be the face of the Belford-based business out in the field, her work being seen as integral to Northumbrian Quality Feeds’ future expansion.

General manager John Naylor, who will be working closely with her, said: “Nikki brings with her wide experience and in this field-based, customer-focused position, she will support and advise livestock farmers, and complete on-farm forage analysis.”

Ms Gilbertson, 26, is from a farming background herself and has long been passionate about the countryside and agricultural industry.

From an early age, she completed lambings and shepherd work, and has recently started showing sheep.

In taking up the new position, she is returning to her roots, having been born at Easington Farm, Belford, from where Northumbrian Quality Feeds operates.

Ms Gilbertson said: “In my new position with Northumbrian Quality Feeds my aim is to help farmers and to see their livestock perform and improve.

“This is a job which, for me, brings with it the ultimate job satisfaction.

“Having a farmer tell you ‘A job well done’ is high praise indeed.”

Ms Gilbertson joins the company at a time when livestock feed has become increasingly sophisticated, with tailor-made solutions for individual farms now being seen as essential.

The seven-strong team at Northumbrian Quality Feeds aim to ensure each farmer’s animals’ specific nutritional requirements can be met at all times.

Ms Gilbertson will play a crucial role in this, giving advice on nutritional and financial efficiencies, and offering forage analysis, mineral analysis, stock blood testing ration formulation and costings.

Mr Naylor added: “These are challenging times for livestock farmers, so it is more important than ever to look at both financial and nutritional efficiencies.

“Nikki will help us grow the business and build on the high levels of service and support we provide.”
