A programme of new developments in the North East’s protected landscapes is underway following investments totalling £749,000.

Northern Lands includes an exciting range of projects designed to bring the landscapes to life and help visitors explore, enjoy and better understand their special qualities.

The programme has been secured with support from the Rural Development Programme for England 2007-13, through Defra and the European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development.

Defra are investing £463,000 in seven projects that will take place in the North Pennines AONB, Northumberland National Park, the Northumberland Coast AONB and the Durham Heritage Coast, as well as Hamsterly Forest and Kielder Water and Forest Park.

Some £286,000 in cash and in support has been added to the project by the protected landscape organisations, Durham County Council and by Northumberland County Council.
