Small and medium sized businesses boasting the best HR and development stories from across the North East are set to be honoured at this year’s CIPD North East of England HR&D Awards.

The awards, delivered by The Journal and associate sponsors Nigel Wright, feature 10 categories, including the SME HR&D Award — sponsored by CIMA, the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants.

Regional SMEs with workforces under 250 people are being called upon to enter their stories of HR&D projects that have positively impacted their businesses.

CIMA regional director Europe Dave Rowsby said: “CIMA, the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants, is proud to be sponsoring the SME Excellence in HR&D Award at the forthcoming CIPD North East of England Branch Awards.

“CIMA has long advocated that more emphasis should be placed on measuring the value of non-financial assets. People are often cited as a company’s greatest resource and this is no different whether the company is an SME or a multinational.

“Businesses must ensure that there is clarity on responsibility, accountability and ownership for people performance management and CIMA research shows that CFO’s usually have this mandate to measure people performance. All businesses, including SMEs, should look to use the CGMAs unique skills in uniting financial facts and non-financial information to provide insight from a base of independence and objectivity.”

He added: “CIMA and CIPD are already working closely together through a strategic collaboration to foster closer working links between the finance and HR professions, helping to increase their combined impact on business performance. The focus is on driving financial performance through people and the importance of HR and finance working together in organisations of all sizes to measure value and risk.”

Last year’s SME HR&D Award went to business and IT consultancy Waterstons.

The 2015 winners will take to the stage at this year’s awards show, which takes place at the Hilton Newcastle Gateshead.

Last year’s dinner attracted over 370 guests, and this year Metro Radio stars Steve and Karen will lead the evening.

CIPD North East chair Elouise Leonard Cross, said “This award is a fantastic opportunity for SME’s to demonstrate good practice in the HR&D area which has positively impacted on the business.

“Previous winners have impressed judges with their ability maximize often small HR&D teams including the use of research, insight or consultancy support to inform and enhance approaches to recruitment, management or development of employees.

“We are delighted CIMA have sponsored this category, reflecting the strong relationship between CIMA and CIPD and the importance within organisations for Finance and HR&D teams to work closely for maximum business impact.”

Details of how to enter this year’s awards will be available each Thursday in The Journal until April 23, the day before closing date for entries.
