FINAL preparations are being completed for one of the most anticipated events in the regional business calendar.
The North East Chamber of Commerce Tyne and Northumberland Annual Dinner takes place at the end of October and features two high-class speakers from the worlds of economics and sport.
Acclaimed author, broadcaster and journalist Will Hutton will provide the keynote address at the gala dinner.
Will, the former editor-in-chief of the Observer, has worked for a string of media organisations including a six-year stint as the Guardian’s economics editor and as an economics correspondent on BBC Newsnight. Will has also published six books.
Will is now principal of Hertford College, Oxford and regularly advises senior political and business figures and comments in the national and international media. A former stockbroker and investment analyst, he is today one of the country’s leading economic commentators and is one of five leading UK names who will help produce a strategic, constructively critical review of the North East economy to provide a blueprint for economic growth up to 2030 for the North East LEP.
Newcastle International Airport has joined Gateshead College, as co-sponsors of the dinner.
Dave Laws, chief executive of Newcastle International Airport, said: “Will Hutton is a welcome addition as keynote speaker at the North East Chamber of Commerce annual dinner. His experiences as both an investment analyst and an economic commentator will no doubt be of great interest to NECC members.
“We have chosen to sponsor the NECC’s annual dinner this year in order to highlight the vital role that Newcastle International plays in the North East economy.
“So it will be very interesting to hear his views on the importance of aviation and the connections that regional airports can provide.”
Will is to be followed on the podium by “Jarrow Arrow” Steve Cram. The former 1500m world record holder and Olympic silver medallist was part of the BBC team that covered the 2012 London Olympics and will reflect on a stunning summer of sport.
John Mowbray, NECC president, said: “To have secured two excellent speakers who are both so well-respected in their respective fields is fantastic.
“This event not only celebrates the achievements of regional companies, it is also a demonstration of our unity as a regional business community. As champions of North East business, NECC is proud to be able to host this prestigious dinner and pay tribute to the pioneering work being carried out across the north of region.”
Richard Thorold, principal at Gateshead College which has a three-year sponsorship deal with the NECC, said: “We are delighted to be supporting the NECC’s annual dinner and very much look forward to hearing from Will Hutton, one of the UK’s most interesting leading media and economic commentators.
“We are committed to playing our part in securing the success of the region long term.”
