Gateshead fair trade organisation Traidcraft is preparing to welcome representatives from US fair trade Co-operative Equal Exchange to Tyneside on a visit that will set out plans to further develop Traidcraft’s exports to the United States.

The US ethical Co-operative, based in Boston, Massachusetts, first ordered 150,000 of Traidcraft’s Geobars in 2012, which were distributed via a network of wholefood stores and church shops across the USA.

Now, in just over a year, three quarters of a million Geobars have been exported to the US company which has also made a 26,000 donation to Traidcraft’s charity, Traidcraft Exchange.

It’s a particularly welcome Northern success story. Geobar is made under licence for Traidcraft by local company Northumbrian Fine Foods, and for Team Valley-based Traidcraft, which has long been an importer of fair trade food ingredients and crafts from across the world, this new export market is welcome in both commercial and partnership terms.
