A mother and daughter team hope to tempt Northumberland dog lovers with their new luxury dog fashion boutique.
18 year-old Alexandria Coulson and her mum Hazel are hoping to capitalise on a trend set by stars such as Paris Hilton, Miley Cyrus and Jimmy Fallon for “purse pets”.
Celebrity endorsement has helped set demand for small dogs, decked with glamorous fashion accessories.
The Coulsons are now on the cusp of opening their Morpeth store – Urban Pooch Ltd – inspired by Alexandria’s search for fashion pieces for her blue French bulldog, Ivy.
Hazel said: “Having recently bought a blue French Bulldog, my daughter and I decided Ivy needed a special collar and lead. To our disappointment we struggled to find what we were looking for. We wanted something a little special for what we think is a very special pup.”
Urban Pooch will stock brands such as ChromeBones, Canagan Feed and Mutts and Hounds, and the pair hope to launch their own lines in the future.
Eyeing a market opportunity to supply owners of “canine babies” with “dog bling”, the mother and daughter team are confident the trend is here to stay in the North East.
“More and more dog owners are becoming enthusiastic about high quality accessories for their pets,” said Alexandria, who is currently completing her A levels at Kings Priory in Tynemouth.
She added: “They also want access to good quality feed and options for healthy living, and to this end we’ll be stocking a range of high-quality, grain free feed and nearly-ready meals.”
Urban Pooch is also planning a consultancy service to those wanting to make sure their pet has the very best diet and lifestyle.
An e-commerce website is currently in development and the pair hope their Morpeth store will be the first of many across the country.
Located on Newgate Street, Morpeth, Urban Pooch will be holding an official opening weekend on December 12-13, with refreshments on offer for both owner and dog.
