AN increasing number of people in the region are opting to start their own business.

Government figures show there are now 110,000 people across the North East working for themselves, up by 4% on a year ago.

Stephen Hall, entrepreneurial business partner at Deloitte in the North East, said: “It’s no surprise that more people are starting their own business given the nature of the wider economy and while not all of these firms will prosper, the businesses that tap into the support available have the potential to be employers and wealth creators. The biggest challenge for individuals starting their own business is surviving the first couple of years but entrepreneurs are resilient and able to search out and profit from opportunities .”
