Mobile web - the next step to winning business

YOU may have invested in a search engine optimisation (SEO) campaign which is driving traffic to your website, but with the rapid growth of smartphones, if your website has not been optimised for a mobile browser, you could be losing valuable customers as well as leaving a negative impression of your business.

YOU may have invested in a search engine optimisation (SEO) campaign which is driving traffic to your website, but with the rapid growth of smartphones, if your website has not been optimised for a mobile browser, you could be losing valuable customers as well as leaving a negative impression of your business.

More people than ever before are using their mobile phone to access the web. A recent report (2010) published by the Office for National Statistics stated that 31% of internet users in the UK went online via their mobile phone in 2010, compared with 23% in 2009.

Further research shows that sales in mobile phones and other mobile devices will continue to grow rapidly during 2011 and as mobile technology evolves it is estimated that web traffic from mobile phones will grow up to eight times faster in the UK than traffic from PCs.

A mobile optimised website will ensure that when the user types your URL into their mobile device, they are immediately detected as a mobile channel user and redirected to a mobile-optimised experience. Taking a step further, a mobile application or “app” provides a one-click engagement tool enabling brands to reach a dedicated and captive audience, usually when on the move, away from other types of media and don't rely on a web connection.

“Mobile offers businesses the chance to get closer to their customers,” says Simon Clayton, business development director at Industrial Strength.

“As the name suggests, the mobile phone is a truly portable device which provides any business, no matter what size or sector, the opportunity to engage directly with their customers, promote their products and services, and build brand loyalty.”

Mobile phones are also revolutionising e-commerce. Research recently undertaken by the Internet Advertising Bureau found that 23 million people in the UK are currently using mobile devices to make payments, redeem coupons or research products and services and as more people embrace the technology, this number will continue to rise.
