British Gas owner Centrica told its 16.5 million customers in July that gas bills would go up by 12.4% and electricity bills by 9.4% on September 4.

Salvage deal is copper-clad

A SALVAGE specialist was celebrating after its latest bounty contained "very high grade" copper.

London-based SubSea Resources said tests showed the copper was 99.9% pure and could be sold at "a very small discount" to the price on the open market.

BG Group hits big new field

BG Group has discovered a substantial new gas field in the North Sea which could provide 100 million to 275 million barrels.

BG, in partnership with US firm ConocoPhillips and Italy's ENI at the field, said it was one of the largest recent North Sea discoveries.

Retirement home in sights

THE Mother Bidco consortium, which includes property investors David and Simon Reuben and retail entrepreneur Sir Tom Hunter, has moved closer to control of £1.1bn retirement home firm McCarthy & Stone after striking a deal with rival suitor Rock Acquisitions.

Rock agreed not to make a rival bid for McCarthy & Stone in exchange for rights to ground rents and house manager income.

Rightmove on the rise

PROPERTY website Rightmove eased its disappointment over Home Information Packs (HIPs) by unveiling a sharp rise in half-year operating profits.

The group reported a doubling in revenues to £15.1m, reflecting 5,000 new advertisers and a market penetration of 74%.

Exports show sharp fall

MANUFACTURING activity slowed more than expected in August, led by a sharp fall in exports. Economists said expansion in the sector fell to its weakest level in five months.
