BORDER Livestock Exchange Ltd to the week ending June 8 marketed 128 prime cattle and 1,191 prime sheep, including 50 ewes.

The beef trade stayed level for the third week. The quality of cattle on offer was more mixed. Prime Belgian Blue steers sold to 215p and £890 Blackburn Mill. Char sold to 210p and £742 Scotstounbank. Lim sold to 207p and £761 Middle Cawledge.

Prime Sim heifers sold to 212p and £651 Humbie Mill; 210p and £730 Blackburn Mill; 210p and £651 Scotstounbank. Char heifers sold to 198p and £613 Fenwick Steads. Young Char bulls sold to 200p and £774 Luggate; 197p and £624, 195p and £674 Shoreswood. Cast Lim cows sold to 170p and £602 Blackcastle, Sim sold to 165p and £613 Scotstounbank. Dairy cows sold to 135p and £509 Lowick Northfield.

More retailers are switching to New Season lamb. Butcher weight lambs command a premium as trade for all classes of lamb continued to see much needed improvements. Cast Blackfaced ewes sold to £40.85 Bowerhouse. Mule ewes sold to £38.80 Over Howden.

HEXHAM & Northern Marts held their Summer Collective auction sale and offered a total of 2,114 catalogued lots for sale.

Over 500 buyers gathered together from as far afield as Aberdeenshire and Lancashire to bid for all manner of items sold under the usual categories; Small tools & workshop items, Gardening equipment; Furniture & household appliances; Trees, shrubs & plants; Implements, plant & machinery; Tractors, quad bikes, 4X4's & vehicles. Once again a quality entry sold exceptionally well with many prices far exceeding vendors' expectations, grass conservation equipment selling especially well with thoughts of hay and silage making to the fore.
