A LUXURY boutique hotel opened its doors to residents with the aim of bringing a new type of hospitality experience to the historic city.

Officially launched by John Sands, chairman of the North-East Tourism Advisory Board, Grafton House, on South Street, over looks the River Wear and the World Heritage site of Durham Cathedral and Castle.

Mr Sands said: “I am delighted to officially open Grafton House. As Durham’s first boutique hotel it will help to increase and improve the tourism offer in this part of the region, giving customers high quality accommodation in the heart of the city.

The North-East businesswoman behind its creation feels that the intimate and stylish venue will be a popular hit for the region

Mary Parker, said: “Grafton House is type of property that you fall completely in love with the first time you visit. We wanted to create a style that keeps many of the building’s original features and provides the ultimate in comfort and privacy for residents, creating a home rather than a hotel.

“I am thrilled to announce that Grafton House is now open, and ready to offer guests a very special level of service. We are confident that once people have experienced what we have to offer, they will be back for more, time and time again. My team is passionate about Durham City, its people and attractions, but, more than that, each and every one of us is devoted to ensuring that our guests leave us with a truly memorable and happy experience.”

For the last twelve months building work has been under way to carry out the detailed restoration to restore Grafton House to its former glory, at a cost in excess of £1 million in private investment. The 10-bedroom venue has been completely renovated.
