A Newcastle engineering firm has been placed in liquidation with the loss of 18 jobs.

Bewick Engineering Limited of Walker Riverside, Newcastle upon Tyne was placed in liquidation on May 7, after almost 30 years in business.

Bewick was a bespoke system manufacturer providing integrated design solutions to a wide variety of high tech industries linked to marine, Ministry of Defence and offshore industries.

Working closely with major equipment manufacturers and project management companies from the conceptual stage through to final commissioning and handover Bewick provided expertise in the specialist area of electro-fluid power control.

The liquidator, Greg Whitehead, a recovery specialist with Northpoint Insolvency Practitioners, said: “In the last 12 months the company saw technical problems arise on some of its projects and orders generally being delayed or cancelled. Finances suffered as a result.”

The Company’s director, Stephen Robson, added in a report to creditors: “The Company lost the nucleus of its customer base firstly due to the loss of traditional industries and secondly in the new business sectors due to the company being unable to satisfactorily achieve the standards of quality, administration and punctual delivery demanded.

“Although there was optimism that new customers had been found to maintain turnover and profitability the new work in the volume needed simply did not arrive.”
