A NEW national initiative, The Local Employment Partnership (LEP), has been launched, aimed at encouraging employers to help disadvantaged people and solve their recruitment issues at the same time.
The LEP involves Jobcentreplus, Working LinksJobcentre Plus and other organisations working together with the region’s employers. More than 30 people have already managed to find work with these four key employers in Tyneside through the LEP and Working Links. Local Employment
Partnerships aims to make work opportunities accessible to people who are disadvantaged in the job market. Via Learning and Skills Council funding, Working Links offers a short programme to help people prepare for work by building their confidence and self-esteem and help them understand the recruitment process.
For retailers such as Marks & Spencer and Waitrose, the training has included helping potential employees to understand selling techniques and improve their communication and presentation skills.
"The programme has been really successful", said Working Links performance manager Owen Peterson. "The support that we offer people through Skills for Jobs helps them recognise their own potential and then perform in the interview to the best of their ability.
"Feedback from employers has shown that they really value this training as it makes the whole recruitment process easier. The provision has also allowed us to work with key partners such as Jobcentre Plus, ensuring quality preemployment training meets current local labour market needs."
